What Are Scleral Contact Lenses?
Scleral lenses are contact lenses designed to provide clear vision for patients with complex eye conditions or unique vision needs. Unlike traditional contact lenses, scleral lenses are larger in diameter and rest on the white part of the eye, called the sclera, rather than directly on the cornea.
Because the lens vaults over the cornea, it creates a smooth optical surface and a protective fluid reservoir between the lens and the eye. This unique design can improve vision and comfort for patients who may not have been successful with traditional lenses.
